What is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation?
This year on September 30th, Canada got a new national holiday (1) to recognize the legacy of residential schools after discovering the remains of 215 children on the grounds of Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia and the abhorrent treatment of Indigenous populations.
The goal is for citizens to take a moment to pause, reflect, and learn about this dark chapter in Canadian history
The date coincides with Orange Shirt Day (2), which commemorates how First Nations children were taken from their communities and forced into residential school systems (3)
In 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released a resort that includes 94 calls to action (4)
The Canadian government has fulfilled 12 of the 94 calls to action
