List of Women of Color Writers

 

Women Empowerment

As we recognize the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, it is critical that we continuously support women and their accomplishments. Here are several women of colour whose writing focuses on women empowerment:

Jodi Tingling writes about mental health and racial justice issues, particularly about career success and workplace burnout for women of colour.

Dr. Natalie Jones specializes in helping professional black women recover from narcissistic abuse and relationship trauma, as well as people who have been incarcerated or in the legal system. She also has a passion for helping those who are in the correctional healthcare setting.

Sowmya Rajasekaran is the creator of Buildupwomen, an online series aimed to support, inspire, engage and build up women across Canada during this time of isolation and uncertainty due to COVID-19.

Racial Justice

As the Black Lives Movement is shining more light on structural and systemic racism, white supremacy and police brutality, the fight for racial justice is now gaining more traction as we strive to make a lasting change. Here is a list of women of colour who are experienced and well-versed in writing about racial justice:

 

Adeboro Odunlami is an advocate for national and global online rights policies, legal advice, and support for ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Policy needs and ICT policy-related issues across Africa.

Amy Ede advocates for intersectionality and accountability for ending violence against the Indigenous Communities. Amy also has experience in offering strategic communications and advice for national non-profit organizations.

Anita Chauhan is passionate about diversity and inclusion and has been an advocate for women in the Toronto tech community. She has 8+ years of experience in the marketing field and has worked at a Toronto-based tech startup in the diversity and inclusion industry.

Jessica Pharm aims to elevate the conversations around Black professionals, particularly Black women, by centering and valuing their experiences in a safe and protected space. 

Jodi-Ann Burey’s work centers around the experiences of historically underrepresented communities, systemic intersectional inequities, and decentering whiteness, particularly featuring stories about women of colour and the healthcare system.

Linh Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Canadian writer, passionate about examining depictions of marginalized identities in popular culture and creating space for underrepresented voices.

Shabana Ansari tells stories that often go unheard about diversity, racial injustice, and underrepresented and marginalized communities through the Peacock Press, her co-founded independent publishing company.

Shellene Drakes-Tull, Founder of Sweet Lime Communications, has a soft spot for diversity and inclusion communications, especially in support of the Black Lives movement. She believes that ensuring all people are represented and seen is key to good communication.

Mental Health

Fortunately, the discussion around mental health awareness has been growing on and offline. However, we must still continue our efforts in working together to continue the conversation and remove the stigma around mental health. Here are several women of colour who are passionate in writing about this topic:

Diane Shaw, Founder of the Scrubs and Scrunchies blog, is a Registered Nurse with a specialization in Immunology and Infection. Her writing focuses on healthcare, mental health & social justice.

Faith Moyosore Agboola, Founder of The African Writers, is a visual storyteller, writer and performance poet who uses her voice and influence to talk on healing, heartbreak, depression, failure, and success to empower others to create a ripple effect that makes the world a better place.

Modessa Jacobs (CurlleeQ) is a non-binary Black person with multiple mental illnesses, and is passionate about sharing stories about capitalism, racial justice, mental health and privilege to help make the world a better place.

Peggy Liu has a creative, conversational writing style. She is passionate about diversity and mental health, and also has experience writing for venture backed startups.
